About Segment

Segment is a single platform that collects, stores, and routes your user data to hundreds of tools with the flick of a switch. Easily get your customer data into Customer.io with Segment.

Customer.io & Segment

With Segment, all the customer data you’re collecting from your websites, mobile apps, or servers can be sent straight into Customer.io so you don’t need to do any additional installation or duplicate instrumentation. In addition to being an integration of Segment’s, Customer.io is also a cloud app source. That means that Segment can automatically collect email events like Email Delivered and Email Opened, forward them to your other tools, and even load them into your data warehouse.

Popular Use Cases

Is your integration with Segment a one way or two way sync?

Two way. Customer.io has native support to act as both a Segment Destination and Source. This bi-directional support allows Customer.io to receive your app/service’s behavioral user data in real time from Segment, and report back the messaging behavior to Segment for use in analytics tools.

What data exactly can I send back to Segment from Customer.io?

Email performance data like ‘delivered’, ‘opened’, ‘clicked’, etc. You can learn more about Segment Sources in the source documentation linked to the right.

I don’t want to send all my Segment data to Customer.io, just the data relevant to messaging and segmenting my audience… how do I control this?

You can find more info about how to limit data being sent to Customer.io (and other integrations) at :https://segment.com/docs/guides/miscellaneous/how-do-i-control-what-data-is-sent-to-my-destinations/

What data is sent to Customer.io by default?

All of your data that is sent to Segment is forwarded to Customer.io, by default.

How do handle email-as-ID status "leads" for our customers. Often these users aren't created in Segment until they activate their account. Is that best practice?

Great question: every company is a little different with how they handle this. If you need help, contact our sales team. We can work with you and Segment to make sure you have the right setup for your data model for Customer.io

Do you support Segment’s aliasing or group calls?

We do not currently support aliasing or group calls.
