Consolidate leads and customers in the same workspace

Released

You can now create workspaces that let you add and identify people by ID and/or email. This lets you incorporate leads and customers in the same workspace, and maintain a history of a person as they graduate from a lead to a customer.

Previously, workspaces supported a single identifier for people—one of either ID or email. This made it difficult to track users who entered your system as a lead (by email) and graduated to a customer (with an ID). You couldn’t easily keep a complete history of a lead who graduated to a customer because this person was represented across two workspaces.

With this new workspace type, you can add people to your workspace by either email address or ID, and you can update those identifiers later. This provides flexibility in how and when you add people to your workspace, and lets you keep a history of a people as their identifiers change and your relationship with them evolves.

This release also introduces cio_id—a unique, immutable identifier that we assign to people in every workspace. You’ll see this new value in the URL when you reference a person, and as an attribute on the profile page. It acts as a person’s canonical identifier, keeping a history of a person across changes to their identifiers, and you can use it to reference people if or when you want to change a person’s identifiers using the API.

Everybody has a cio_id, even in existing workspaces.

We assign a cio_id attribute/value to all people, so that you can migrate to a workspace supporting multiple identifiers later. But, if you have a classic, ID-only workspace and you don’t plan to migrate your workspace, you can safely ignore this value.

You can create new workspaces supporting multiple identifiers today. You’ll find settings to migrate your existing workspace to this new workspace type, under Settings > Workspace Settings > General Workspace Settings.
